– manthramugdha

It is once again Kannada movie time in San Jose, California. In the late nineties and early 2000s there would be utmost four or five Kannada movies a year and each would run for 3 or 4 shows. I remember when we went to see Upendra’s ‘A’ the line outside the Milpitas AMC was so long it reminded me of standing in Sampige or Navarang. People were sent back because the show got sold out. But all that slowed down after the dot-com bubble and the B2B (Back-to-Bangalore) phenomenon affected Kannadigas here. So from then on Kannada movies were rare and each would not run for more than 1 or 2 shows.

But starting with Mungaaru Male we started seeing some movies being screened for 2 weeks and then again coming back for a third week after a break. This should not give you the impression that these shows ran for big crowds. When I went to Mungaaru Male on a Monday night I was the only one in the entire theater even though it was 10 minutes past the start time. The show started after another 15 people joined 20 minutes later. Another day when I went to Milana there were only five people for the whole theater, which could accommodate about 400. I think the time slot for a show is a sunk cost for the theaters/distributors. So they might as well run it no matter how many watch it.

After watching a disappointing Milana I still headed to GaaliPata having heard that it was a 25-week hit from the makers of Mungaaru Male who had displayed good taste and some understanding of what entertains Kannada audience.

The show on Sunday April 13 2008 at 8.00 PM in IMC San Jose was filled with about 40 people. As I walked from the parking lot to the theatre complex which screened movies from different Indian languages, a couple was walking past me and were talking in what sounded like Konkani or Marathi. But at the ticket counter I was thrilled when they said “2 tickets for Galipata”.
